Paper Grotto

Paper Grotto LIVE...

is a Video, Dance and Music performance inside a giant paper sculpture set. The performers appear and disappear inside the sculpture installation as it is built from the inside out. The video projection on sculpture and dance creates a mesmerizing look into a hyper-real "living painting".

About the ELEMENTS featured artists

Mila Apperlo

MILA APPERLO is an artist who mainly works with painting. With a subtle minimalistic approach, she creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found.

Her paintings directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. With a conceptual approach, she tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way.

Her works doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By applying abstraction, Mila creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles.

By choosing mainly formal solutions, she tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.

MILA APPERLO currently lives and works in Estero, Florida.

Guy Tieman

I had always loved creating art as a child and after high school in Ridgewood New Jersey I went on to pursue my creative development in college. I attended Alfred University in New York State and received a BFA degree in Printmaking and Photography in 1983 and in 1987 I received a MFA degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in Glass Art.

After college, while living in Urbana Illinois, I pursued my career as a glass artist; successfully establishing myself in many galleries which specialized in glass throughout the Midwest and parts of the East Coast.

In 1999, with two young toddlers in tow I moved to Southwest Florida and put my artistic aspirations aside; I got a “real job” and focused on raising my sons.

In 2014, with my children in high school, I realized that I was again ready to begin creating art for myself. Not wanting to burden myself with the intricacies and labor often involved with glass art and wanting to really enjoy the act of creating, I quickly developed a distinct body of work that allows me to experience the true satisfaction of artistic expression.

Now I find myself reveling in the joy of creating with a sense of childlike abandonment. I have come full circle.

Artist’s Statement
As we age, we tend to lose our ability to explore, express and take risks. Through my art I am trying to reconnect with this childlike ability; to try new forms of expression with the simple goal of enjoying the experience of being creative. For my drawings series I start with paper and graphite pencil; I draw some simple lines and forms which then becomes the basis of my piece and then begin the process of adding color in a reactive and responsive fashion until I am satisfied with my effort. For my other series of work titled “Of Tinkertoys and Crayons”, using wood and paint I create a field or body into which I build windows or pockets which I fill with dowels of different colors, shapes and sizes as a complimentary reaction to the body. I hope that you enjoy the results.
